One Reader’s Reflection on Two Recent IRCJ Articles
By Jason Eng

Document: Student Response

Introductory Paragraph:

As a senior teacher education major, the Spring 2020 academic quarter marked a new first—remote learning. This took some adjustment. For us teacher candidates, a heavy load of our coursework is based on interaction, discussion, and collaboration. No longer being able to meet in person once every weeknight meant online meetings and discussion board posts.  One of the courses I took was Middle Grades Supervised Field Experience. Every week, we were expected to visit our placement schools and observe and work with our cooperating teacher(s) and their respective students. For me, physically being in a classroom provided a deeper experience than reading about the different teaching methods and education philosophies in textbooks. With Chicago Public Schools being relegated to remote learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, that meant my experiences and observations had to come from different sources (i.e., articles and teaching videos). While it sounds less than ideal, the professor in charge of this course, Dr. Mindy Kalchman, made this transition easier by consistently relaying feedback in response to my personal reflections as well as sharing useful and relatable content. She asked me to read and reflect on two articles from the Illinois Reading Council Journal.  Here are my thoughts.
