Family Engagement in Literacy: Social and Emotional Learning, Trauma-Sensitive Classroom Practices, and Tools to Promote Culturally Responsive Family Engagement By Eric Junco and Oliver Camacho, Guest Authors
Document: Column
Introductory Paragraph: Our column in the previous issue discussed critical support that teachers can provide to empower families and students in shaping culturally responsive schools through trauma-sensitive family engagement. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased opportunity gaps and access to trauma-informed practices in schools and to mental health support systems (Ladson-Billings, 2021). Furthermore, interconnected stressors have fomented intergenerational trauma among family members, resulting in posttraumatic stress and other disorders seen during a pandemic (Rousseau & Miconi, 2020). As teachers are the first responders in the area of mental health in schools, they must be aware of trauma-sensitive practices and link them to systems of support for students and their families.
