Finding Common Ground: Understanding Ourselves and the World Through Literature:  What Makes a Friend, Family, Home?
By Jung Kim and Deborah Augsburger

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  Relationships built in family and friendships are central to the experience of youth as they grow and develop. From the first friendships developed on playgrounds and classrooms to the changing dynamics of child–parent relationships as they grow more independent, youth are constantly navigating their relationships with others as they understand their place in the world. What makes a friend? Who do we see as family? Where do we call home? These are all questions and ideas explored in this issue’s books. From anthropomorphic food to Greek monsters and African mermaids, a diverse array of protagonists make friends, love their families, and save the world and themselves.
