Family Engagement in Literacy:  The Politicization of Education: Four Big Ideas for Navigating Challenging Times with Students’ Families
By Laurie Elish-Piper

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  If you are like me, you became a teacher because you enjoy working with young people, have a passion for learning, and believe education is a key to opportunities and success in life. I will admit that I was idealistic (and a bit naïve) when I became a teacher over three decades ago, and the idea of education being political surprised me early in my career. While education has become more political over the past couple of decades—remember No Child Left Behind, Reading First, and Race to the Top, for example?—those bipartisan national education policies focused on improving education outcomes for all students, including those from low-income and minoritized backgrounds.
