Using Emotions to Generate Ideas for Personal Narrative Writing in Primary Grades
By Sarah Dumler

Document: Article

Introductory Paragraph:  When primary students approach personal narrative writing, there can be a lack of quality topic ideas. This study examines how students can generate personal narrative topics based on strong emotions. Students used a graphic organizer and mentor texts categorized by emotion to brainstorm writing ideas. The students were taught how to use these resources through teacher-led mini-lessons and peer discussions. Results showed that all students were able to come up with more personal narrative topics after this strategy had been used. In addition, the majority of students were able to reflect that they could come up with some or many ideas and could identify a strong emotion in their personal narrative pieces. Using emotions as a basis for brainstorming personal narrative topic ideas is an accessible and equitable strategy to use with primary students.
