Empowering Readers with Books: Shelf Life—Food, Culture, and Community
By Kathleen A. Paciga and Melanie D. Koss

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  In this column, we take up the idea that there is no shelf life on books featuring foods shared by diverse groups. Through the rich intersections of culinary traditions, cultural identity, and social justice, the selected children’s and young adult titles invite readers of all ages to consider how meals can nourish more than bodies—they can sustain memories, foster belonging, and spark conversations about equity, access, and care. Whether through picturebooks honoring farmers and chefs or YA novels exploring identity and resilience, this column serves up a literary feast that affirms the power of food to tell stories that matter.
