Using Orthographic Mapping as a Routine to Improve Spelling Accuracy in Primary Grades
By Samantha Contreras and Jennifer Parisi

Document: Article

Abstract:  Due to the opaque orthography of the English language, monolingual English-speaking and bilingual Spanish-speaking students frequently encounter difficulties with English spelling. The purpose of this study aimed to explore how implementing orthographic mapping as a strategy during English phonics instruction would help monolinguals and bilinguals commit difficult words to memory and, thus, spell words with more accuracy. A phoneme-grapheme matching routine consisting of five steps was implemented during phonics instruction. Results of the pre- to posttest found that English-speaking students increased overall words spelled correctly; however, Spanish speakers demonstrated more improvement with correct spelling of consonant ending blends. This study revealed that orthographic mapping as routine was beneficial to both student populations to increase spelling accuracy.
