Embarking on Literacy: Toda’s Deductive Approach as a Guide to Early Home Reading By Yutong Li
Document: Article
Introductory Paragraph: In the early stages of language development, the importance of reading to a child cannot be overstated. Reading plays a pivotal role in boosting early language acquisition and development in children (Batini et al., 2020b). While the advantages of reading extend across a person’s life, they are particularly significant during early childhood (Cabell et al., 2019). Out of the 3,000 words children add to their vocabulary annually, only a small portion (a maximum of 200 to 300 words) is a result of explicit vocabulary instruction, with the majority of words acquired through exposure to reading aloud or individual reading (Nagy & Anderson, 1984, and Batini et al., 2020a, as cited in Batini et al., 2020b). Additional research findings suggest that children who are consistently exposed to reading will experience notable enhancements in their language skills when significant adults, such as parents or teachers, actively participate in reading aloud (Lonigan & Whitehurst, 1998, Ronfani et al., 2006, and Toffol et al., 2011, as cited in Batini et al., 2020b). Parents, being the individuals who understand their children the most (Policastro et al., 2019), play a significant role in early childhood reading.
