By Hyoju Ahn and Tara Johnston

Document: Article

Introductory Paragraph:  In a digital world, students must be able to read a wide range of text types across multiple platforms, such as audio, video, and visual combinations, as they navigate, comprehend, and use multimodal texts online. This article focuses on online multimodal reading (OMR) strategies for constructing the conceptual knowledge and vocabulary building developing readers need for academic success. Drawing on prior research that investigated OMR strategies (Ahn, 2023; Casey, 2012; Chan & Unsworth, 2011; Cho et al., 2018; Davis & Neitzel, 2012; Fitzgerald & Palinscar, 2017; Hovious et al., 2020; Salmerón & García, 2011; Salmerón et al., 2020; Smith, 2019; Wolsey et al., 2015), we introduce five types of OMR strategies for elementary and middle-level student readers. We also provide classroom vignettes for teachers to help them understand how to use each strategy for effective vocabulary instruction.
